Why We're Asking Students to "Disconnect and Dance"

July 17, 20242 min read

At Red Door Dance Academy, we are committed not only to the artistic and physical growth of our students but also to their overall well-being. In today's world, where digital devices are constantly vying for our attention, it's become more important than ever to carve out spaces where we can be fully present, focused, and engaged. That's why we've introduced our new policy: "Disconnect and Dance."

The Impact of Digital Distractions

Research has shown that excessive screen time, particularly on smartphones and other internet-enabled devices, can have significant impacts on mental health—especially for children and teens. Constant notifications, the pressure to stay connected, and the endless scroll of social media can contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, and stress. We believe that by limiting these distractions, we can help create a healthier environment for our students.

Why "Disconnect and Dance"?

When students step into our studio, we want them to immerse themselves in the joy of dance without the interruptions that digital devices bring. By placing their smartphones, smartwatches, and other internet-enabled devices in our "Disconnect and Dance" boxes at the start of each class, students can be fully present, connecting with their peers, instructors, and themselves in a more meaningful way. This focus allows them to gain the most value from each class, enhancing their skills, creativity, and overall experience. Research that shows when your device is within reach (even in a dance bag at the side of the room), distraction still exists.

Supporting Mental Health

Our decision to implement this policy is rooted in our commitment to our students' mental health. According to www.waituntil8th.org, delaying the introduction of smartphones to children until at least eighth grade can significantly reduce the risks associated with early and frequent use. We encourage parents to explore this resource and consider the long-term benefits of limiting screen time for their children.

Another great resource, if you are interested in further reading about the impact that phones and social media can have on our children is the book The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt.

What You Can Do

We understand that this is a shift from the norm, and we appreciate your support in helping us create a more focused and mentally healthy environment for our students. We suggest discussing this new policy with your dancer before their next class to help them understand the reasons behind it and the benefits it brings.

Thank you for partnering with us in this effort. Together, we can ensure that every student at Red Door Dance Academy has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and, most importantly, dance with their whole heart—free from the distractions of the digital world.

Testimonials

We love Red Door! We've been attending the studio now for almost two years. My daughter has blossomed so much during that time. Dancing is her love. She looks so much forward to dance class. If she could, she would be there every day. The instructors are kind, attentive, and fun. We have gone to a previous dance studio before, and have done many other activities as well, and this is the one place where I know my daughter feels welcomed and appreciated. The studio is also clean and the parents are very friendly. I have met so many other amazing moms there that I now consider my dear friends. Thank you Red Door!

They are SO organized and so professional!! We also LOVE the recital they put on at the end of the Spring Semester.
